Boon responded to a query on Twitter about new characters and explained that two never-before-seen fighters will be revealed next week.

The tweet didn’t provide any details about who the new fighters are, but it’s good to know that some fresh blood will be included on the roster. It’s not too surprising to hear that the team may slow roll the reveal of the full roster, which has become a bit of a habit for fighting games (Xbox One’s Killer Instinct for example), but fans will likely be just as excited by the inclusion of new playable characters as they will be when they find out which classics are returning.
[2011 Mortal Kombat Spoilers ahead!]
Although the plot in fighting sims is often an afterthought, the Mortal Kombat lore has a pretty impressive history of keeping players entertained. The most recent installment in the franchise attempted to revisit some of the classic stories by following the same format as the JJ Abrams Star Trek films or X:Men: Days of Future Past and implementing some creative use of alternate timelines to resurrect old characters and reinvigorate the aging series. As a side effect of all the time travel, many fighters bit the dust at the end of Mortal Kombat (2011), leaving some big shoes to fill in the roster.
We wouldn’t be surprised to see many of the deceased rise from the ashes in the new game, otherwise the roster will have to be comprised almost entirely of new faces. With a franchise that created some of the genre’s most iconic characters, attacks, and costumes; we’d be shocked to see them not capitalize on that established popularity.
Do you have any predictions about what the new fighters will be like? Which classics do you think will make an appearance? Let us know in the comments.
Mortal Kombat X will be arriving at some point in 2015 on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC.
